Why is this medication prescribed?
Etidronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates, primarily used to strengthen the bone. Bone is in a constant state of remodeling in which old bone is removed by cells called osteoclasts, and new bone is laid down by cells called osteoblasts. Etidronate inhibits bone removal by the osteoclasts.
This medicine is used to treat Paget's Disease, and to treat conditions of irregular bone growth due to hip fracture or spinal cord injury.
